Using EndNote with the UNC-Chapel Hill Online Catalog
Important: You will need to update your connection file for the UNC-Chapel Hill online catalog. Please follow these steps:- Right-click on the following link: U of NC-Chapel Hill.enz. This is the new connection file.
- Select save link as...
- Save the file into your Endnote connections directory. This is often c:\program files\endnote\connections\ but will vary depending on where your copy of Endnote is installed.
- Select Yes when asked if you would like to overwrite the existing file.
- If you were running Endnote when you saved the file, exit and restart Endnote.
- From within Endnote, use the new file by selecting:
Tools --> Connect --> Connect...
Find the file U of NC-Chapel Hill alphabetically. It is in the Library Catalogs section in Information Provider - Highlight it and click on the Connect button.
- The Endnote search interface should come up. You can limit by field
and use boolean operators but other than that, it's pretty limited. If you
enter terms in each of the search boxes, for example the words information
and ethics, make sure you change the default operator to AND rather than
OR. OR will give you everything with either word in it.
- Once you've entered your search, hit the search button and a little box should pop-up and tell you how many books it found: "1 through 200," for example. You don't have to download all of these citations into your library. You will get a chance to review them. If you click on OK, it will download however many citations you tell it into Endnote - but not any particular library.
- The next window you'll see is what I call the "waystation" where you can open the citations and decide if you want to copy them in to a particular library. You can select them one by one, select a block, or just copy them all. You'll see a Copy All References (or if you've selected some) Copy Selected References drop down menu at the top of this screen. The drop down menu is where you can select which library you want to add them to or open a new library.
- Once you've added them to your library, you're set. You can close the connection just by clicking on the x in the corner. The search box is still there, but usually gets hidden. If you want to return and redo the search, just minimize the other boxes till you find it.
