This book is concerned with an act that is of utmost importance in Hinduism: Seeing and being seen by the "deity." Images, festivals, temple worship and pilgrimages are discussed. It contains large, black and white photographs.

Fowler, Jeaneane. Hinduism: Beliefs and Practices. Brighton, UK.: Sussex Academic Press, 1997.
Good, general, practical study of Hinduism. Includes chapters on "Worship in the Home and Temple," "Food and Dress", and "Hindu Festivals." Hinduism is treated as a "living religion" here.

Huyler, Stephen P. Meeting God: Elements of Hindu Devotion. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1999.
This contains a fine text describing Hindu worship, but the full-page color photographs are particularly arresting and take center stage.

Krishna and gopisKinsley, David R. Hinduism: A Cultural Perspective. 2nd ed. Englewood Clifffs, NJ: Prentice Hall, 1993.
This is a thorough, short book on Hinduism. Includes history, dissent within the religion, the arts, central beliefs, representative thinkers (one is Gandhi), worship, "Sacred Female Imagery," and "Hindu Social Structure".

Kinsley, David R. The Sword and the Flute: Kali and Krsna, Dark Visions of the Terrible and the Sublime in Hindu Mythology. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1975.
This fascinating book is a study of the "intoxicating" god Krsna (or Krishna), and the "terrifying" goddess Kali, who are highly significant members of the Hindu pantheon. The author includes generous amounts of devotional poetry to the gods.

Nammalvar. Hymns for the Drowning: Poems for Visnu. Trans. A. K. Ramanujan. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1981.
This book contains beautiful, clever devotional poetry written by the saint-poet Nammalvar in the ninth century, dedicated to the god Visnu. Originally written in Tamil, a language of South India, this is an excellent English translation.
