Recognize Plagiarism (Continued)

Here is an ACCEPTABLE example of a quotation and paraphrase used together:

At the turn of the century noted African-American author W.E.B. Du Bois acknowledged,not only the difficulty African Americans faced in their attempts to integrate into the more established white population, but also their hesitation at losing their African identity. “In this merging he wishes neither of the older selves to be lost.” While recognizing how much each culture had to gain from the other, he expressed his desire that African Americans be accepted into American society as equals, without fear or threat of discrimination. "He simply wishes to make it possible for a man to be both a Negro and an American, without being cursed and spit upon by his fellows, without having the doors opportunity closed roughly in his face (1903, p.4).”

The preceding paragraph is considered acceptable paraphrasing because:
