How Long Does Copyright Last?
hourglassFor works produced after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the creator plus 70 years. After the copyright protection ends, the work moves into the public domain and can be copied without permission. However, Congress has the power to alter the copyright duration, as in 1998 with the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act (pdf). For information about works created before 1978, please click here.
