Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution authorizes Congress "to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries."
Copyright is intended to promote learning. The way it accomplishes this is goal is by protecting a creator's form of expression. Authors and other creators of unique arts will be more prolific if they know their works are protected from unauthorized copying.
