About Votes

Votes are held to decide procedural questions and motions as well as to pass amendments and legislation.

The House and Senate have different methods for voting which are governed by complex rules. See How Our Laws are Made and Enactment of a Law for details.

In the House, members may vote by voice, division, standing, or in a recorded vote, which since 1973 uses an electronic ballot.

The Senate may vote by voice, standing, or by roll call vote.

Roll call votes are recorded and reported in the sources that follow.
