Manuscripts Research Tutorial
Local Repositories
Sometimes, your research may lead you to look beyond the holdings of the Manuscripts Department. Since each repository has unique materials and, oftentimes, unique strengths, you may find it necessary to consider other repositories as well.

Several local repositories have collections and other materials, which complement the Department's holdings. On the UNC Chapel Hill campus, the North Carolina Collection, the Photographic Archives, and the Rare Books Collections all have related materials. You may search the online catalog and departmental web sites for the holdings of these repositories:

North Carolina Collection: Second Floor, Wilson Library
Photographic Archives: First Floor, Wilson Library
Rare Books Collection: Third Floor, Wilson Library
  • Holds the Southern Pamphlet Collection, which includes over 10,000 pamphlets, brochures, and broadsides, dating from the 1820's to present.
Duke University's Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library located in Durham, North Carolina holds both published and manuscript material related to the Civil War and the American South. You may search the Duke Library's online catalog to learn more about their holdings.

The North Carolina State Library and the Office of Archives and History hold many public records, some particularly useful in genealogical research.
