As manuscripts are irreplaceable and often fragile, careful handling by the researcher is essential. When handling manuscripts always:
- keep the documents in order;
- be especially gentle with bindings, creases, tears, and folds;
- hold photographs by the edges;
- prevent damage (do not alter the documents in any way); and
- follow the repository's rules.
Each repository you visit will have different rules regarding access. Check with the reference staff to learn about their particular procedures. Your cooperation will help to ensure that all researchers can enjoy using the materials for years to come.
