Access and Handling
Repositories like the Manuscripts Department provide access to unique historical records, giving you the opportunity to explore the past hands-on. When you visit a repository, you may encounter special facilities and procedures that are often different from those of a lending library.
Manuscripts Department Search Room
Typically, at the Manuscripts Department:
  1. You register as a researcher;
  2. You review the Manuscripts Department Rules;
  3. You request the material you wish to use;
  4. You use the materials on site in the monitored Search Room.

As manuscripts are irreplaceable and often fragile, careful handling by the researcher is essential. When handling manuscripts always:

In some cases, repositories substitute original materials with copies. For example, a repository may provide you with a VHS or DVD viewing copy rather than the original 16 mm film.

Each repository you visit will have different rules regarding access. Check with the reference staff to learn about their particular procedures. Your cooperation will help to ensure that all researchers can enjoy using the materials for years to come.
