Refworks Online Help
There is a quick, simple direct export for RefWorks built into the individual record screens in the UNC-Chapel Hill online catalog. However, if your records contain diacritical marks (such as accents), a separate procedure for importing Marc records from the catalog will result in cleaner data. Please see our guide to importing Marc records from the UNC-Chapel Hill Catalog.
Classic Catalog
If you prefer to use the classic version of the catalog, there is a simple direct export for RefWorks on individual record screens and also on results pages. If you are working with numerous records in the classic catalog, or your records contain diacritical marks (such as accents), you should see our guide for
importing Marc records from the UNC-Chapel Hill Catalog.
Wite-N-Cite (WNC) is a program that works with Microsoft Word and RefWorks to format bibliographies. When you are away from campus, WNC must tell RefWorks which Univeristy you are affiliated with in order to properly log you in. There are two options:
- Group Code:
You can get the Group Code by following this link. Enter it as prompted by WNC. This option is recommended for Mac users, for those using beta versions of WNC, and for anyone experiencing access problems. Access to the Group Code is limited to current UNC-Chapel Hill affiliates.-- OR --
- Library Proxy Server (for Windows):
- Select the
Start Button-->Programs-->RefWorks-->WNC Configuration Utility
- Paste in the following URL:
http://libproxy.lib.unc.edu/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true - Click OK
- WNC should now be configured. You will be prompted for your ONYEN when WNC starts.
- Note: Off-campus users may receive a notice from their browser about an invalid RefWorks security certificate. It is safe to add the exception to your browser.
- Select the
Start Button-->Programs-->RefWorks-->WNC Configuration Utility

The Group Code allows RefWorks to identify an off-campus user's institutional affiliation. Current UNC-Chapel Hill affiliates can look up the current Group Code here.
Next, you'll need to set your Google Scholar preferences to enable importing of references into RefWorks. You can read more about Google Scholar here.
Often, records downloaded from library databases such as ERIC or PsycInfo will include links to an article or links back to the record within the database itself. If you try to use one of these links from off-campus, the link might not work since the database does not know that you are affiliated with Carolina. You can manually enter our proxy server stem in front of such links, and this should allow you to access the linked item if Carolina has paid for a subscription. For example:
- You have a link to:
http://search.epnet.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=eric&an=EJ679466 - In order to access this from off-campus, you can insert the proxy server stem in front of the URL. The proxy server stem is http://libproxy.lib.unc.edu/login?url=
- Your completed URL will be:
http://libproxy.lib.unc.edu/login?url=http://search.epnet.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=eric&an=EJ679466
