RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic management and formatting program. Refworks is available to all current UNC students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
Refworks 2.0
Refworks has launched a significant interface upgrade - version 2.0. You may be presented with the new interface the next time you log in. If you'd like to switch back to the 'Classic' way that Refworks used to look, you can do so for a limited time. If you have any questions about this change, please contact us with the chat link to the right or via email. Refworks has also provided a walkthrough of the changes to version 2.0.
To switch back to Classic, click the link in Refworks' header shown here:
To do the reverse and switch from Classic to 2.0, click the link in Refworks' header shown here:

How do I create a RefWorks account?
You can create
an account from on or off campus.
If you're an alumnus, here are the steps to set up your alumni account:
- If you already have a Refworks account: Under the Tools menu pick "Update User Information". Change your Type of User to "alumni", then click Update.
- Whether you already have a Refworks account or not, contact us via the links below and provide the following:
- Your name
- Your Refworks account name (if any)
- The year you graduated
- The degree you earned
- Send your information to us using one of these forms: Health Affairs alumni | all other alumni.
We will verify your alumni status and reply to you with the group code and (if necessary) how to set up an account.
How do I access my account from off-campus?
When you are off-campus, RefWorks needs to determine which Univeristy you are affiliated with. There are two ways to do this:
- Library Proxy Server (for Windows):
- Simply access RefWorks from links on our library web pages. Our links will automatically work with the proxy server.
- Alternatively, you can create a bookmark
or shortcut to the following address:
http://libproxy.lib.unc.edu/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/
- Note: Off-campus users may receive a notice from their browser about an invalid RefWorks security certificate. It is safe to add the exception to your browser.

- Group Code:
You can get UNC's current RefWorks Group Code by following
this link. Access to the Group Code is limited to current UNC-Chapel Hill affiliates. Then, you can visit www.refworks.com to login directly, enter the Group Code when prompted, and then login to your RefWorks account.
