Geography and Maps

Maps and atlases are great tools for getting a feel for the landscape and geographic borders of your destination. Many geographical resources are available to you at UNC-Chapel Hill.

A wide range of maps can be found in the Maps Collection in Davis Library. The Undergraduate Library and Davis Library have many types of atlases, including international and historic. They are on atlas cases in each library's reference section. A few useful atlases are:

Maps show China from its prehistory to the 1960s. Also includes extensive explanatory text.
Davis Library Reference and Undergraduate Library Reference G2306.A1 H4 1966

State of China Atlas. New York: Penguin Reference, 1999.
Maps of China are marked by province with economic, health, environmental, and other statistics. Additional data is also provided in tables.

Notes:
Davis Library's Reference area also has many street maps of individual Chinese cities. Search the catalog or Ask a Librarian for help if you're interested. If you have more in-depth questions about travel in China, you can contact the Libraries' Chinese-language specialist, Hsi-Chu Bolick.

Visit the Davis Library Maps Collection's page for further information on finding maps.

For an extensive collection of online international maps, search the University of Texas's Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection. Here you can find maps of China.

Believe it or not, you can get driving directions for major Chinese cities through Mapquest. You can also get great city maps. Note that the maps are not complete--only major streets are named.
