Language Resources
There are many resources out there to help aid in language learning. Want to brush up on your Spanish or learn Swahili before you travel abroad? The following section provides information about language learning resources that you can check out from the Media Resources Center (MRC) or access via NC LIVE, the state's online library service. There are also freely accessible web resources, some of which are highlighted below.
Language Resources Available at UNC-Chapel Hill
There are many materials available in the Library's general collections. These resources can be found by searching the Library catalog. Below are some sample subjects by which you can search for language learning resources.
- Nepali language -- Sound recordings for English speakers
- Nepali language -- Conversation and phrase books -- English
- Nepali language -- Self-instruction
- Spanish language -- Study and teaching -- English speakers
- Spanish language -- Dialects -- Latin America
- Go to the MyiLibrary Collection (access from off-campus will require you to login with your Onyen and password).
- Once logged in, use the Search box on the right-hand side of the screen to type in the language of your choice (example: French)
- To narrow down your results, you can then use the links that will appear on the left-hand side of your screen. Limiting your subject to "Language and Literature" is one way to see the most relevant results. You can also sort your results by date published, title or availability for download.
- BBC Languages
An easy to navigate site for help with languages. Try the "Languages of the World" section, which features facts and phrases from 20 of the world's most widely spoken languages. - FSI Languages
This Foreign Service Institute resource developed by the United States government includes hundreds of hours of language courses, all in the public domain. - Learn a Language
A quick reference source for language help. The site divides language resources into words, phrases, verbs, culture, dictionary, blog and tutors.
MRC Language Learning Kits
The Media Resources Center (MRC) in the R.B. House Undergraduate Library is home to a collection of language learning kits. These audio kits primarily include multiple CDs and may include some text materials. They are available in a number of languages, from Arabic to German to Zulu. Language Learning eBooks & audiobooks
Language learning resources are conveniently available online through NC LIVE. Ebooks and audiobooks are also accessible through the UNC Libraries catalog.
