Library Classification Systems in India

The Pilgrim Book House, Varanasi, courtesy Pilgrims Handicrafts

Libraries in India use a wider variety of systems for classifying and organizing materials than American libraries. The two most popular systems in academic, public, and commercial libraries are Dewey Decimal and Colon Classification. Some libraries choose to create their own classification methods instead. Many libraries require patrons to ask a librarian for all materials they need. This is especially true of libraries that hold research-level materials or historical manuscripts. Please ask librarians for whatever assistance you need.

Many academic and large public libraries have online card catalogs in English. The search terms are generally similar to those used in UNC-Chapel Hill's Library Catalog.
