SBN

The National Library Service or Servizio Bibliotecario Nazionale (SBN) is a network of state, local, and academic libraries, and its online portal can help you:

find out which library in your area owns a copy of the book you need
obtain information about specific libraries, including location, hours, and access restrictions
borrow an item from a distant Italian library using interlibrary loan services

The types of materials cataloged in SBN include:

modern books
older books
music
manuscripts

Because SBN is a state library network, don't be surprised to find early editions and older materials there: it's a great tool for historical research. SBN also offers an English-option interface. Che fortuna! (How fortunate!)
