Computer Commands

Although Italian computer lingo has incorporated lots of English terms, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with these key Italian concepts. Even in the English-interface SBN portal, you may eventually link to local catalogs with Italian-only interfaces. So it's useful to know these basic commands.

Instead of “search” buttons, look for “cerca” buttons in library catalogs
Instead of advancing or hitting “go,” try “avvia” or “inizia ricerca” (start search)
Likewise, to “refine a search” is “raffina ricerca” in Italian
And to “view a list” of records, look for the phrase “visualizza elenco”
If you need to go “back,” look for an “indietro” button

Another hint: if you’re browsing the web from a computer with English-language software installed on it (like your laptop), you can sometimes move your mouse over the top of an Italian language button and the English-language equivalent will appear. Try this out on the buttons below:
