Gaining Access

Using a library's collection may not be as easy as simply walking through the door. You may not even be able to walk through the door, or you may not be able to use the collection, without special papers or identification.

The British Library is a good example. Visitors are welcome to tour the library and view the library exhibition, but can only access the reading rooms if they have a special pass. In order to obtain the special pass you will need your student id, a document with your home address (such as a bill), your signature, and possibly proof of University registration.

You should consult the institution's website or call ahead to find out what you will need in order to use the library. Some libraries will call this "conditions for access" or "admission". At Cambridge, non-University members must obtain a "reader's ticket" to use the library.

You may need identification and perhaps even a special pass to use many of the libraries in Ireland and the UK. It is always best to have your passport and student id with you at all times. You may even have to pay a fee.

The library or archive may also require a letter of introduction. This is something you will want to obtain before going to the library. Letters of introduction can often be written by your faculty advisor at UNC or at the University you are visiting.
