Subject Headings
Subject headings group related material together in order to make it easier for you to find more books on your topic. To conduct a subject heading search, you must know and enter the exact Library of Congress subject heading assigned to the book. Unfortunately, subject headings are not always obvious. For example, the main subject heading for movies is Motion pictures, and not "movies." Because entering a subject heading directly can be a little tricky, here is a good way to find relevant subject headings for your topic.
- Perform a regular search by entering the terms that describe your topic;
- Look at the catalog record and click on the Subjects tab to see what subject headings are used;
- Revise your search using the terms in the subject field or click on the linked subject heading.
Refine Your Search Results
After you have completed your search, you may want to start looking at different catalog records or you may decide to refine your search results. On the left side of your search results, you will see options to help you narrow your search results more easily. For example, you can limit your results by language, which is useful if you are looking for books only in English or in another language.
