Position: Head, Web Developer Group (**INTERNAL ONLY**)
Available: May 1, 2013

The Health Sciences Library (HSL) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented individual for the position of Head of the Web Developer Group. The individual in this position provides leadership of the Web Developer group and the Health Sciences Library, and helps to define and articulate the vision, strategic directions, and priorities for information technology in a dynamic environment that values creativity, teamwork, and innovation. The HSL is an integral and vital part of the University Library. This position collaborates with colleagues across the libraries and participates in library-wide groups and initiatives.

The Head, Web Developer Group is responsible for developing and implementing web-based and other electronic applications that provide access to resources, services, and information for the library's users and staff. The individual in this position serves as chair of the Virtual Presence Advisory Committee (VPAC), and functions as the project manager of HSL's virtual presence, which includes the HSL website (http://hsl.lib.unc.edu/) and intranet, the NCHealthInfo health information portal (http://www.nchealthinfo.org/) the North Carolina AHEC Digital Library, and related subsystems. Additionally, the Head of the Web Developer Group manages the HSL IT development project portfolio, advises on appropriate technical solutions, estimates effort required, and helps to set priorities on all VP/IT-related projects. The individual in this position assigns work, oversees project management, and assesses performance of the developer staff. This position provides leadership and expertise in user-centered design, assessment, and works to ensure that library web systems meet user needs and expectations. As Head of the Developer Group, this position is part of the HSL Library Management Council and the Department Heads Group, bringing a technology perspective to the work of these groups and helping to assure open communication across the library around issues with a technology aspect.

The Head of the Web Developer Group seeks professional engagement and collaboration; works in active partnership with other Library departments, particularly University Library Systems; and collaborates with the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (AHEC), UNC Medical Center's Information Services Division, the University's Information Technology Services (ITS) Department (http://its.unc.edu/ITS/index.htm), other technology units on campus, and the Triangle Research Libraries Network (http://www.trln.org). This position works to identify health information resources for potential use within electronic health record (EHR) systems, and to determine feasibility of integration with systems based on case-specific interoperability capacity. This position works in collaboration with the UNC Healthcare EHR System Team and with AHEC-affiliated Hospitals IT staff members to offer technical assistance and guidance, where applicable, to specific to Health Resource integration and linking. Additionally, the individual in this position maintains an awareness of developments in library and information technology fields and demonstrates a successful record of professional activity.

The HSL Web Developer Group has 5 permanent staff and additional undergraduate and graduate student support; it directly supervises 4 staff. The group manages the Health Sciences Library's websites and helps seek or create and implement technology solutions that meet internal and external users' needs for public access and discovery systems, communication, library business functions, and the AHEC Digital Library.

Qualifications

Required:
ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science or advanced degree in related field. Supervisory experience managing and leading an application development team. Experience with web user interface design, evaluation, testing, and accessibility, and assessing the needs of customers. Strong project management skills. Experience with XHTML, CSS, XML, XSLT, database design and development (e.g. Microsoft SQL), and web database middleware development (e.g. ColdFusion). Demonstrated ability to excel both independently and as a team member in a collaborative working environment; excellent time management and problem-solving skills; strong interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated knowledge of current information technology developments in libraries and higher education.

Preferred:
Knowledge of clinical information systems - analysis, knowledge management, and support of clinical processes strongly preferred. Familiarity with internet and intranet product development and methodologies. Knowledge and application of web standards, best practices, and web application security. Experience with versioning software such as Subversion. Knowledge of the organization and services of libraries. Health information technology knowledge, experience, or certification. Demonstrated knowledge of current information technology developments in health care strongly preferred. Commitment to serving information needs of health professionals and the general public. Active professional involvement in the library or information technology fields.

This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
