Position: University Archivist

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a knowledgeable, innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented individual for the position of University Archivist. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Special Collections, the Archivist will provide vision and leadership for the University Archives and Records Management Services (UARMS) department. The Archivist supervises the Electronic Records Archivist, as well as students, project staff and interns as appropriate.
The University Archivist will build on and maintain a strong and responsive program for educating and working with UNC schools, departments, and offices to ensure the scheduling of University records in accordance with State of North Carolina public records laws and records schedules, and will work closely with the emerging Carolina Digital Repository on the ingestion and preservation of University electronic records of long-term value.
The University Archivist will work collaboratively across the library, including with the Special Collections Research and Instructional Services department to support research in UNC history and will have lead responsibility for providing administrative reference service for UNC administrators, faculty, and staff. The Archivist may serve on reference desks and work occasional evenings and weekends. In consultation with the Special Collections Technical Services department and the Conservation Lab, the Archivist will develop priorities for the processing and conservation of University records. Additionally, the Archivist will also work with the Library's Development Office to help identify, cultivate, and participate in the solicitation of prospects, and to steward relationships with current donors to ensure regular contact and reporting. The Archivist will also actively pursue grant and other funding opportunities. Working with the Library's Communications Office, the Archivist acts as spokesperson for UARMS with the media, individuals, and scholarly and community groups.
The University Archivist will develop programs recognizing and promoting UNC history, including chairing the University History Council; maintain an active program of exhibits, presentations, information, publicity, and online presentation of holdings to ensure awareness and visibility of the University Archives on and off campus; and work with student groups and alumni to document developments significant to the life of the University. The Archivist is also expected to participate actively in and contribute to the work of library and campus committees, professional organizations and initiatives dealing with university records and history.
The University Archives (www.lib.unc.edu/mss/uars/index.html) has significant holdings documenting the history of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the nation's oldest public university, including records of University offices and student organizations, and records of the General Administration of the 17-campus UNC system. In addition to the University Archives, the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library includes the North Carolina Collection, the Rare Book Collection, the Southern Historical Collection, and the Southern Folklife Collection. The University Archivist serves on the Special Collections Management Group, which meets regularly to consider matters affecting all of Special Collections.
Qualifications
Required:
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program with a concentration in archival management strongly preferred, but a Master's degree in American history/studies or public history or related discipline with relevant experience in an archival repository may be substituted. Minimum of five years professional experience in an archives or special collections repository. Knowledge of principles and techniques for managing electronic records. Management experience in an archives or special collections repository, including supervising staff. Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining relationships with faculty and staff to support the building and use of archival or special collections holdings. Demonstrated leadership and collegiality, including formulation of long-range plans, achievement of intermediate goals, and establishment of realistic priorities. Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of users and constituencies. Active participation in appropriate professional organizations. Excellent oral communication and writing skills.
Preferred:
Recent experience in managing an archival program that includes records management services for an academic or research organization. Experience in applying public records laws to the selection and use of official records. Knowledge and awareness of current trends in the digitization of unique and rare scholarly resources for preservation and access and in establishing digitization priorities and programs. Reference experience in an institutional archives, including providing administrative reference services. Successful experience in fund-raising, donor cultivation, and grant-writing. Track record of participation, publication, or presentation in the archival profession. Experience in developing exhibitions, presentations, and other public programming.

This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
