The person in this position will be responsible for primary technical support on Macintosh and Windows platforms in the House Undergraduate Library, including support for the Library's general public access computing and its audio and video editing labs. This position also provides general programming support for staff in the Undergraduate Library and maintains its website. The Library seeks an engaged individual who will be alert to the technological needs of the students who use the Undergraduate Library and who can drive innovation in computing-based services there.
As a member of the Desktop and Networking Unit in the Library Systems Department, the Support Specialist provides technical support to staff members of the University Library and assists library patrons with technology resources in the Libraries. The Support Specialist acts as part of a team that installs, monitors, and maintains hardware and software for the Library's more than 1,000 public and staff computer workstations, responds to requests for user assistance, and plans the implementation of new desktop services. Service is provided in Davis, House, and Wilson Libraries, as well as in specialized branch libraries housed in academic departments across campus.
The Libraries deploy a mixture of Windows and Mac OS based desktops, laptops, and tablets to support standard office automation; specialized library systems, including the integrated library catalog/inventory/accounting system and the OCLC international bibliographic utility; and advanced platforms for the digitization and manipulation of scholarly materials from the Library's collections. The Systems Department operates 30 internal servers running Windows, Red Hat Linux, and Sun Solaris, maintains its own Active Directory service, and works closely with ITS to maintain its extensive internal network.
This position is being recruited for at the Contributing Competency Level under the Career Banding program. The expected hiring range for this position is $39,816 - $43,000
Qualifications
Required:
Graduation from a two year technical college with a major in computer science, information technology or related area and one year in the information technology field related to the position’s role; or graduation from a four year college or university and one year experience in the information technology field related to the position’s role; or graduation from a four year college or university with a major in computer science or information technology or related degree. Related information technology experience may be substituted year for year for the required education.
Preferred:
Extensive knowledge of and accomplishments with the range of software tools described above, including expertise with MacOS platforms, along with the ability to evaluate new tools and technology. Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of structured programming techniques and effective technical documentation skills are important, along with knowledge of HTML/CSS/PHP. The ability to form and maintain effective working relationships with staff and users is crucial. Familiarity with multimedia applications, image, audio, and video editing is desirable.
