The University Library's Preservation Department is responsible for ensuring long-term access to scholarly resources. The department includes programs for preventing damage and loss of library collections, obtaining replacements and making reproductions, repairing damaged materials, managing commercial and in-house binding, and preparing new materials for public use.
The Preservation Management Assistant's (PMA's) main areas of responsibility are replacing damaged and deteriorated materials, disaster preparedness, needs assessment, environmental monitoring, departmental communication and background research for projects. The PMA evaluates damaged and fragile books that are poor candidates for repair, selects strategy for ordering and creating replacements, orders replacement books, requests digital, paper, and microfilm reproductions from service providers, tracks orders and carries out quality control. Works with a wide variety of library employees to develop and maintain disaster preparedness documents, contributes to training programs for library staff, inventories and replaces disaster response supplies. Surveys the condition of collections and monitors temperature and relative humidity in library facilities. Maintains the Preservation Department's public internet and staff intranet sites. Contributes to background research and management for preservation projects.
This position is being recruited for at the Advanced Competency Level under the Career Banding program.
Qualifications
Required:
Completion of high school and two years experience in office support, preferably as a library technician in a library.
Preferred:
Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time, and organize complex assignments. Excellent oral and written communication skills, sound judgment, and attention to detail. General knowledge of research library operations, familiarity with bibliographic records, and some experience with circulation and acquisitions systems preferred. Experience with spreadsheets, databases, digital imaging, and web authoring tools desirable.
