Looking Beyond the Five Year Plan: The Academic Library in 2025

Presentation Topics:

Keynote Address

John Price Wilkin - Associate University Librarian for Information Technology at the University of Michigan. He has helped to develop many digital programs and is coordinating the University of Michigan's participation in the Google Books Project.

The Library Collections of the Future
What will the libraries of 2025 collect? Do we need to redefine what a library collection is? Will libraries continue to own most of the materials they collect, or will they increasingly have to rely on subscriptions and other continuing costs? How will libraries provide access to traditional books and archival materials?

Speakers
Paul Jones - founder and director of ibiblio.org, and Clinical Associate Professor, School of Information and Library Science, UNC-Chapel Hill.
Greg Raschke is Interim Associate Director for Collection Management, Organization, & Preservation at North Carolina State University.

The Future of Library Spaces
What kind of presence will the library of 2025 have on campus? Will it continue to be a prominent feature at the heart of the university, or will libraries be consigned to smaller rooms, kiosks, or even entirely virtual spaces? What can recent planning efforts tell us about what our users and administrators expect and envision?

Speakers
Mary Reichel - University Librarian, Appalachian State University.
Diane Strauss - Associate University Librarian for Public Services at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The Library Staff of the Future
What does the future hold for library professionals? Will the MLS continue to be required? With the increased outsourcing of cataloging and with many reference services available virtually, what will the librarians on campus do? Will we all just operate out of a giant warehouse in Dublin, Ohio?

Speakers
Irene Owens - Dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences at North Carolina Central University.
Rebecca Vargha - Librarian at the School of Information and Library Science library at UNC-Chapel Hill. She is also the 2005/06 President-Elect of the Special Libraries Association and the Librarians' Association of UNC-Chapel Hill.

The Library on the Desktop of the Future(Gary Marchionini, Andrew Pace) When library users turn on their computers in 2025, what kinds of library services will they be able to use? Are there services that we're not providing online now, but would like to if we had the budget and technological capability? Will there be anything left by 2025 that won't be available electronically?

Speakers
Gary Marchionini - faculty member at the School of Information and Library Science at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Andrew Pace - Head of Systems at North Carolina State University and writes the "Technically Speaking" column in American Libraries.

Panel discussion: Managing the Library of the Future()
After a day of wild speculation, library administrators discuss the practical side of planning for the distant future. Is it possible to plan twenty years ahead? Change isn't cheap: how do we explain the library of the future to administrators and other funding agencies? How can we think beyond current technology as we plan future buildings and programs? In the midst of rapid change, is there ever a desire to try to "save" the traditional library?

Panelists:
Sarah Michalak, (moderator) - Associate Provost and University Librarian at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Rosann Bazirjian - University Librarian at UNC-Greensboro.;
Deborah Jakubs - Rita DiGiallonardo Holloway University Librarian and Vice Provost for Library Affairs, Duke University;
Susan Nutter - Vice Provost and Director of Libraries at North Carolina State University.
