About our tour guide: Will Owen came to Chapel Hill in 1975 to work on a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. In 1976, he started working in Wilson Library as a student assistant in Bibliographical Services – later known as Collection Development. In 1980, with library work looking better than Comparative Literature, Will took a full-time job in Collection Development. He became the first "systems" employee in the Library in 1985, started library school at NCCU in 1987, and received his MLS from there in 1990. He was appointed Systems Librarian that same year, and became Head of Library Systems in 1996. Will’s career as a tour guide began in 2001 when, as a member of the CALA Steering Committee, he proposed offering a campus tour to new CALAs as a way of welcoming them to Chapel Hill and offering them a bit of campus history in addition to their standard library orientation.
