The 2000 LAUNC-Chapel Hill Conference presents topical issues concerning the role of libraries and librarians as well as practical applications for online searching in the new millennium.

The morning speaker is Carol Tenopir, whose presentation is entitled Looking Back to Our Goals. Dr. Tenopir is Professor of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and author of the regular Library Journal column "Online Databases."

Following Dr. Tenopir's address, participants will attend two concurrent sessions during the conference. Sessions are outlined below:

Kate McGraw, Ready for Business: Using NC Live Business Sources, will present a practical hands-on session during which participants will explore the business resources available through NC Live. Ms. McGraw is the Information Services Coordinator for the Health Sciences Library at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Due to space considerations, participants may be asked to share a workstation.

Derek Rodriguez, Turn of the Century Trends and Opportunities in Library Automation, will present a discussion on the development of library automation with emphasis on current trends and opportunities. Mr. Rodriguez is the Systems Librarian at Davidson College, Davidson, NC. Session presented twice.

Eric Morgan, MyLibrary@NCState, a Pro-active Library Service, will give an introduction to using the MyLibrary@NCState system which provides the means for librarians and patrons to create collections of hyperlinked resources in the form of personalized HTML pages. The system also supports the means for providing pro-active library services by opening targeted communications channels between librarians and patrons as well as the infrastructure for current awareness services. Mr. Morgan is the Networked Technologies Development Librarian at North Carolina Sate University Libraries, Raleigh. Session presented twice.

Linda Collins, To Your Health: Medical Resources for Consumers on NC Live, will present a hands-on guide to finding consumer health information using the resources available through NC Live. Ms. Collins is the Education Librarian for the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Due to space considerations, participants may be asked to share a workstation.

Following the concurrent sessions, participants will reassemble for the final speaker of the conference.

The afternoon speaker is Joanne Marshall, whose presentation is entitled Looking Forward to Our Heritage. Dr. Marshall is the Dean of the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
