The Maps Collection provides the principal map reference service for the campus library system. It also provides research and teaching assistance for cartographic resources as well as instruction in the use of these materials.
Circulation
The Maps Collection's primary mission is to provide
reference and research assistance, supporting teaching and
research at the University through use of cartographic
resources. Many of the materials in the Collection may be
checked out. Considerations restricting circulation
include format, size, reference and research needs, and
preservation. North Carolina materials, except USGS
topographic quadrangles, generally do not circulate. Loan
periods range from two hours to one week with renewal
possible. All materials are subject to immediate recall.
Eligible borrowers include UNC-Chapel Hill faculty, staff
and students, TRLN and other UNC campus students, faculty
and staff, and those with a valid UNC-Chapel Hill library
borrower's card. See Borrower's Cards for more
information.
Copying Services
Copying services formerly provided by Imaging and Photographic Services are
no longer available. To acquire copies of materials in the Maps
Collection, please consult with the Maps Staff.
Interlibrary Borrowing
The Maps Collection accepts requests from other libraries
through the Library's Interlibrary Borrowing
department. Not all materials in the Maps Collection are
available for borrowing through Interlibrary Loan.
Materials borrowed are restricted to use in the requesting
library. Format considerations frequently necessitate
filling requests with photocopies. Reference or research
assistance can be provided for requested materials that do
not circulate.
