Project Goals and Activities
- 1. Review and Report on Trends and Needs

1.1 Compile proceedings from Southern Sources 2005 conference

1.2 Publish Southern Sources proceedings on Library website

1.3 Perform literature searches and reviews of relevant topics

1.4 Conduct focus groups and discussions with scholars in southern studies to identify needs and trends

1.5 Compile research and write pre-workshop report on research trends and needs to share with workshop participants

2. Survey Existing Digital Collections

2.1 Conduct broad, detailed survey of existing digital collections

2.2 Visit and confer with digital curators at other institutions
-
2.3 Explore opportunities to network and collaborate with other digital projects throughout the world

2.4 Confer with other UNC-Chapel Hill experts on issues related to planning, building, maintaining, and sustaining large-scale digital manuscript collections and networks

2.5 Compile research and potential models and write pre-workshop report to share with workshop participants

3. Host Workshop in Spring 2008

3.1 Identify leading southern studies scholars and invite their participation in 2008 workshop

3.2 Identify experts in digital curation and invite them to facilitate presentations and discussions at the workshop

3.3 Identify and invite distinguished keynote speaker

3.4 Reserve conference rooms and participant accommodations

3.5 Make travel arrangements for participants

3.6 Plan and organize meals and other conference events

3.7 Send Southern Sources proceedings and preliminary research reports to workshop participants for review prior to workshop

3.9 Convene two-day workshop on UNC-Chapel Hill campus

4. Develop and Populate Decision Matrix

4.1 Develop preliminary decision matrix outline to share with workshop participants

4.2 Revise preliminary decision matrix based on workshop output

4.3 Begin to populate decision matrix using SHC as test bed

4.4 Test iterations of the decision matrix with faculty and expert input

5. Develop Sustainability Models

5.1 Research legal, copyright, technological, and sponsorship issues

5.3 Write report summarizing and analyzing potential models for funding and sustaining large-scale digital manuscript collections

6. Publish Final Reports
