| Abstract | The Abernathy family was located in Tennessee and Texas. Family members include Jesse Jones Abernathy (1817-1895), his wife Sarah Esther Howard Abernathy, and the Abernathys's children, Alfred (b. 1879) and Anesta (1880-1973). Both Jesse Jones Abernathy and Alfred Abernathy were physicians and professors at the Medical College of the University of the South, and Anesta Abernathy was a nurse. During the Civil War, Jesse Jones Abernathy worked as a Confederate Army surgeon in Bowling Green, Ky. The collection contains family correspondence and other papers of the Abernathy family of Tennessee and Texas. The correspondence, chiefly 1907-1913, relates to family matters and social affairs in Devine, Medina County, Tex., and Alto, Tenn., and Monteagle, Tenn.; Alfred Abernathy's activities at the University of the South; and Anesta Abernathy's activities as a nurse at various locations. Also included is an account book, 1868-1874, with records of medical services rendered by Jesse Jones Abernathy; writings by Jesse Jones Abernathy on religious topics; genealogical materials; and photographs. |

Series 1. Correspondence, 1874-1952 and undated.
Arrangement: chronological.
The bulk of the correspondence is between Alfred Abernathy, first as a student and then as a faculty member at the University of the South, and his mother and sisters in Alto, Tenn., and Devine, Tex. The correspondence chiefly covers family and social matters, and there are some letters of Anesta Abernathy, circa 1900-1905, that relate to her career as a nurse.
