Abstract: David Wyatt Aiken (1828-1887) was a Confederate
colonel, South Carolina and U.S. representative, and
agricultural reformer.
An account of Aiken's early years, written ca.
1864 while he was serving in the Confederate Army.
The narrative covers his childhood, including his
education at Mt. Zion Academy, Winnsboro, S.C.; his
attendance at South Carolina College, Columbia, 1846-
1849; his teaching at Mt. Zion, 1850; a long illness;
courtship; and travels in England, the Continent, and
the southern, eastern, and midwestern United States,
1848-1851.
