              PENELOPE ELIZA HOWARD ALDERMAN PAPERS
                            Inventory

Abstract: Penelope Alderman was the wife of the Rev. Amariah
Biggs (1819-1889), a Baptist minister who organized
and pastored churches in Sampson County, N.C.
Diary of Penelope Eliza Howard Alderman
(1834-1893), of Sampson County, N.C., covering the
period January 1851 through August 1856. Starting
with her marriage day and continuing through 18 August
1856, Penelope Alderman made entries documenting her
daily life in Sampson County, N.C., and the birth of
three of her twelve children (Penelope Ann, 1851; John
           Thomas, 1853; J. Palmer, 1855). Initially, the
entries, made two or three times a week, are quite
brief. By February 1854, however, she was making
almost daily entries, many of them detailing not only
her own life, but her husband's activities and those
of her neighbors, family, and friends.
