           University of North Carolina about student life and
           campus and town events in Chapel Hill, N.C.; and
           miscellaneous other letters.

                          DESCRIPTION

       Scattered family and personal letters received by members
of the Alderman family of Fayetteville, N.C.  Most of the letters
are addressed to Miss Belle Alderman (later Mrs. J. Ed Hawley),
and some are addressed to her sister Miss Kate.  Six letters are
from their brother William Colin Alderman.  Belle, Kate, and
William were the children of William and Annie Purviance
(Jackson) Alderman.  Among the correspondents are William T.
Purviance and Mrs. L. P. (Floy) Erambert, with mention of Henry
Alderman of Sanford, N.C.


Folder 1.  1874-1878.  Five letters from William T. Purviance to Belle
           Alderman, written from Galveston and New York, where he was in
           the cotton brokerage business.

           1876.  Invitation to Miss Belle.  1 item.

           1877-1878.  Six letters from William Colin Alderman at
           the University of North Carolina, to his sister Belle, telling
           of his daily activities as a student, and the
           events on campus and in the town of Chapel Hill.

Folder 2.  1884-1886.  Letters from friends to Belle and Kate
           Alderman.  4 items.

           1914, 1918.  Two letters from William, while in the U.S. Navy,
           to Belle.

           1919.  Letter from Kate T., Birmingham,  Ala., to Miss Kate.

           1924.  Letter from Marshall R. Anspach, Williamsport, Pa., to
           Mrs. Hawley.

           1925.  Letter from Anna Boush, Delray, Fla., to Mrs. Erambert.
