Scope and Content
The papers of John V. Allcott, architectural historian John V. Allcott of Chapel Hill, N.C., consist of correspondence, photographs, photocopies of manuscripts, and other material relating to the architectural history of North Carolina, particularly of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Much of this material was collected for use in two books, Colonial Homes in North Carolina and The Campus at Chapel Hill: Two Hundred Years of Architecture.
Original blueprints, formerly with these papers, of buildings on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were transferred to the University of North Carolina Archives.

Series 1. Correspondence, 1957-1977.
Arrangement: chronological.
Letters to John V. Allcott, and a few carbon copies of letters from him, relating chiefly to specific buildings or other matters of North Carolina architectural history. A number of letters concern Allcott's attempts to document the works of Alexander Jackson Davis and other 19th-century architects associated with the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Arrangement: by subject.
Files relating to historic buildings on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus and elsewhere, as well as other subjects relating to architectural history. Most of this material relates to Allcott's books Colonial Homes in North Carolina (1963) and The Campus at Chapel Hill: Two Hundred Years of Architecture (1986).
Included are notes by Allcott, photo- and hand-made duplicates of architectural drawings and manuscripts, clippings, and other items relating to specific buildings. For the most part, items with early dates are copies.
Also included are a small number of notes on subjects other than buildings.

Photographs and other pictures, chiefly of buildings at UNC and elsewhere, collected by Allcott. Allcott appears in photos 45 and 46. Also included are copies of two drawings: one is of a street scene and is captioned, "Greetings Alice & Jerry from Darkest India! May 1985" and the other is of the top part of a building and is captioned, "Greetings Alice & Jerry. New Bern Victorian. April 86."
