Biographical NoteCharles M. Alley was a private in the 44th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment of the United States Army during the United States Civil War. After the war, he participated in a number of business ventures in Boston, Mass., and Hartford, Conn. He was married around 1870, and had six children. Back to TopCollection OverviewThe collection consists of letters and other documents related to Charles M. Alley's service in the 44th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment of the United States Army during the Civil War. Included is a letter written by Alley on 16 November 1862 from New Bern, N.C., detailing his regiment's departure from Boston, Mass., landing in New Bern, and marching and occasional fighting in eastern North Carolina. Also included is a letter, 29 August 1889, from George M. Sackrider, also in the 44th Massachusetts, asking Alley for his assistance in obtaining a pension based on hearing loss suffered during the Civil War. Alley responded to this with a letter offering assistance and detailing his post-war business and personal affairs. Also included is a roster of the 44th Massachusetts Regiment Association, 1 January 1900; an unbound book of signatures of members of the 44th Massachusetts; and a metal stencil with Charles M.
