James Atkins (1850-1923) was a clergyman of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South; the bishop of North Carolina; the president of Asheville Female College, 1879-1889; and the president of Emory and Henry College, 1893-1896. He was married to Ella Maria Branner and they had a son, James Atkins, Jr., a real estate broker of Waynesville, N.C.

The collection includes family and professional correspondence of James Atkins; and family and business papers, 1920-1931, of James Atkins, Jr. Correspondence of James Atkins is primarily concerned with family and religious affairs, with some descriptions of travels abroad and within the United States. Among the correspondents are B. B. Comer, F. M. Simmons, and Edwin Mouzon. Some items are related to educational institutions with which Atkins was affiliated including Haywood County, N.C., schools; Asheville Female College; Emory and Henry College; Vanderbilt University; and Southern Methodist University at Dallas, Tex. There are also items related to Methodism, its doctrine, growth in the South, and missionary work. Volumes include miscellaneous records of the Asheville Female College and Emory and Henry College and brief diaries, 1891, 1895, and undated. Among the miscellaneous and undated items are sermon notes, articles for publication, and scripture quotations.
