Information
Alfred H. Baird, born in Marshall, N.C., on 16 November 1843, was a Confederate colonel serving in Tennesse, Kentucky, and various locations in North Carolina. Baird joined the Buncombe Riflemen which became a part of the First North Carolina Regiment in 1861 and served with his regiment at Bethel near Yorktown, N.C. When his six month term of enrollment was completed he returned to Marshall and raised a company of cavalry, of which he became captain. He served in Tennessee and Kentucky and was promoted first to major and then to lieutenant-colonel, with the 6th North Carolina Cavalry. During the latter part of the Civil War, he served in eastern North Carolina, at Kinston and Bentonville, and was with Johnston's army at the surrender to Sherman. After the war, Baird moved to Arkansas, where he lived on a plantation near Springdale.
