Ship captain Charles Wesley Battie is thought to have been a native of Massachusetts. He married Lizzie Scandlin (1858-1925) and lived with his wife and son, Herbert Scandlin Battie (1884-1942), aboard ship until around 1893, when the family settled in Greensboro, N.C.

Sailing charters and other items, 1873-1892, relating to the career of Captain Battie. Materials document the ships he commanded and their cargoes and itineraries. The ships were chartered to carry a wide variety of goods--hardwoods, grain, molasses, sugar, and guano. Battie seems to have sailed chiefly in South American and West Indian waters. Also included are a few letters, 1884-1885, from former employers attesting to Battie's good character; a description written in 1888 by Lizzie Scandlin Battie of the flood she witnessed in Valparaiso, Chile, that claimed many lives; and "The Sailing Career of Captain Charles Wesley Battie," a chronology of Battie's professional life complied by Joseph Lowman in 1993.
