| Abstract | Edwin B. Borden was president of the Bank of New Hanover in Goldsboro, N.C., in the 1880s and 1890s and president of the Bank of Wayne in Goldsboro, N.C., in the early 1900s. He was married to Ella Lambert Borden, originally of Richmond, Va. The collection includes family correspondence of Edwin B. Borden, primarily letters written from Borden to his wife Ella Lambert Borden. These letters are mostly concerned with local and family news, social events, business dealings, family health, and news of their two children. Most of these letters were written from Edwin in Goldsboro to Ella in Asheville, N.C. Several letters were written to Ella in 1886 while she was in a hospital recovering from an unspecified operation. There are also a few letters from Ella to Edwin and to Ella from her cousin Mary and from her friends Belle Henderson and Hannie Caslin. Also included are two unidentified photographs and one tintype. The tintype was originally attached to an 1886 letter from Edwin to Ella; it is an image of a little boy, presumably their son. |
