Abstract Audio recordings and related materials mostly containing radio programs, 1958-1961 and undated sponsored by the Haywood, Calif., chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Gilbert Brooks, an African American radio host and son of Buster Allen Brooks, who founded the Haywood chapter of the NAACP, hosts the majority of the radio programs, which are mostly concerned with the status of African Americans in the mid-20th century; civil rights, education, employment, and the history of the NAACP are among the topics discussed. Select recordings include interviews or commentary by C. L. Dellums, an African American labor activist who was part of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, as well as a speech by Franklin Williams, an African American lawyer and civil rights leader. Also included are several tapes containing recordings of NAACP meetings and other activities.

This collection is given in honor of Buster Allen Brooks, founder of the Hayward, circa, Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Received from Nathan B. Brooks (grandson of Buster Allen Brooks, nephew of Gilbert Brooks) of Chapel Hill, N.C., in October 1994 (Acc. 95151).

Gilbert Brooks was born circa 1935. He is the son of Buster Allen Brooks, who founded the Haywood, Calif. chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In the late 1950s and early 1960s Gilbert Brooks hosted radio programs for the Haywood chapter of the NAACP.
