| Abstract | Maude Davis Bunn was born in 1888 in Yadkin County, N.C. She attended Meredith College in Raleigh, where she met lawyer J. Wilbur Bunn. They married on 17 September 1913 and had five children. Maude Davis Bunn was active in community and political affairs, traveled widely, and wrote a column based on her experiences for the Raleigh Times. The collection includes tems produced and collected by Maude Davis Bunn of Raleigh, N.C. Included are materials relating to her family, community, and political involvements. In addition to letters, there are invitations to and programs from community and family events; writings and speeches; calendars; Bunn, Marion, Davis, Stuart, and Wray family history materials; financial materials; and "Thoughts, Letters, and Collectibles," a collection of letters, poems, quotes, prayers, and articles from which she drew her Maude Bunn's Scrapbook columns for the Raleigh Times. Also included are items relating to Meredith College, the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs, the Olla Podrida Book Club, and other organizations with which she was involved; printed items, travel diaries, and other items from the many domestic and foreign trips she took; and photographs of family and friends, both in albums and individual prints. Among the travel materials is an extensive annotated scrapbook from the 1939 automobile trip she made with her children from North Carolina to California and back. |

Biographical Information
Annie Maude Davis was born on 9 June 1888 into the Davis and Marion families of Yadkin County, N.C. She left farm life to attend Raleigh's Meredith College, where she majored in English. She then met J. Wilbur Bunn, a graduate of Wake Forest Law School, who was starting a law practice in the area. They married on 17 September 1913 and eventually had five children: Julian Wilbur Bunn Jr., Thomas Davis (Buck) Bunn, Donald Floyd Bunn, Nancy Elizabeth Bunn Wray, and Dorothy Marion Bunn Stuart.
Maude Davis Bunn won the North Carolina State Mother of the Year Award in 1964. She was active in organizing family reunions and in researching and recording family history and genealogy.
She was also active in community and civic organizations. At Meredith College, she was a member of the Alumnae Association and the Board of Trustees. She also was president of the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs, the Raleigh Woman's Club, the Raleigh Garden Club, and the local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of the Olla Podrida Book Club, the American Mothers Committee, the Hayes Barton Baptist Church, and the United Church Women. She was also interested in politics, giving radio addresses to support local candidates and alerting them to issues that concerned her.
Bunn traveled extensively to destinations within the United States and abroad. In the summer of 1939, she and her children traveled by automobile from North Carolina to California and back. In the 1960s, she wrote a column for the Raleigh Times called "Maude Bunn's Scrapbook" about her travels and other activities.
J. Wilbur Bunn died on 11 January 1969. Maude Davis Bunn was hit by a car on Whitaker Mill Road near Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh and died on 14 December 1977.

Series 1. Letters and Writings, 1932-1978.
Arrangement: chronological.
Letters and other writings produced and collected by Maude Davis Bunn. These items relate to Bunn's family, community, and political involvement. In addition to personal letters, there are numerous invitations to community and family events, as well as the programs for these events. Writings include speeches she gave in support of political candidates, radio addresses, short stories, and other presentations.

Series 2. Diaries and Calendars, 1913-1976.
Arrangement: chronological.
Maude Bunn's collection of diaries and daily calendars. The 1913 diary recounts her marriage to J. Wilbur Bunn. The 1950 calendar includes several lengthy entries about the trip she took to Europe (see also series 7.3). The 1950 and subsequent calendars also include notations and some descriptions of the day-to-day activities she engaged in, including organizational meetings and family gatherings. She also occasionally commented on her mood.

Series 3. Thoughts, Letters, and Collectables,
1940s-1970s.
"Thoughts, Letters, and Collectibles" includes letters, poems, quotes, prayers, and articles from which she drew her "Maude Bunn's Scrapbook" columns for the Raleigh Times. Although Bunn referred to this as her "scrapbook," it is not a traditionally bound item, but includes some notebook pages with materials glued to them and several folders of loose items.

Series 4. Family History, 1940s-1980s.
Narratives, articles, and genealogies related to Maude Davis Bunn, her ancestry, and her descendants. Included are narratives written by Maude and J. Wilbur Bunn describing their early lives and newspaper articles about them and their children. The Marion and Davis families are particularly well-represented. Included is a photocopied excerpt from Bunn's The Genealogy of Marion-Davis Families (1973).

Series 5. Financial Material, 1964-1977.
Arrangement: chronological.
Financial statements related to the estates of J. Wilbur and Maude Bunn. The majority of the documents pertain to J. Wilbur Bunn's will and the of his assets, including a personal statement by Maude Bunn to the family. Also included are some of Maude Bunn's financial documents, lists of monetary gifts she made, and documents pertaining to the gift given to Wake Forest University in J. Wilbur Bunn's name.

Series 6. Organizations, 1927-1998.
Arrangement: alphabetical.
Letters, programs, presentations, articles, historical narratives, and other materials relating to some of the organizations with which Maude Bunn was involved. The greatest number of materials are from Meredith College, where she was a member of the Alumnae Association and a trustee, and the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs, for which she was president. The Olla Podrida Book Club files include a history of the organization, as well as presentations Bunn gave on topics including the Bible, modern Egypt, highway beautification, and slavery.

Large scrapbook with photographs, brochures, programs, notes, and other materials relating to the summer 1939 automobile trip that Maude Bunn and her children took from North Carolina to California and back.
