Sallie Wood Moore was born in Hertford County, N.C. She married Samuel James Calvert (1856-1944), co-founder of the Jackson Courier, lawyer, and state legislator, in 1878. The Calverts lived in Jackson, Northampton County, N.C., and had five children including James Wheeler Calvert, May Calvert, Sallie Moore Calvert, Julia Monroe Calvert, and Paul Faison Calvert..
