William Cain (1847-1930) was a mathematician and civil engineer. He was the son of William Cain and Sarah Jane Bailey Cain of Hillsboro, N.C. He came to the University of North Carolina as a member of the faculty in 1889.

The collection includes chiefly engineering notes of William Cain concerning bridges, retaining walls, pipe culverts, and a survey of cross sections of the French Broad River, western North Carolina, 1868-1869. Also included is a portfolio of memoirs, written by Cain in the 1920s, about the Civil War and his relatives, Superior Court Judge John Lancaster Bailey and William Henry Bailey.
