| Abstract | Joseph Cathey was a farmer, miller, and merchant in Haywood County, N.C. He was the son of William Cathey, one of the earliest Haywood County settlers. Cathey represented Haywood County at the North Carolina Constitutional Convention of 1835, and he served one term in the North Carolina Senate in 1842. The collection consists of an account book documenting Joseph Cathey's accounts with individuals, 1872-1873; an account book documenting accounts with individuals, including members of the Cathey family, for general merchandise, provisions, and dry goods, 1875-1890; and correspondence, agreements, bills, a summons, and a notice of an estate sale, 1833-1874. Included is a letter to Cathey from J.S. Moor, 16 June 1845, in which Moor urged Cathey to accept the Whig nomination for North Carolina Senate, running against Nicholas Woodfin. |
