Collection Overview
| Size | 0.5 feet of linear shelf space (approximately 250 items) |
| Abstract | Members of the Clark and Blizzard families resided chiefly in Clinton and Fayetteville, N.C., and in Patterson, N.J., as did members of the related Kernshaw and Hightower families. The collection is primarily correspondence of members of the Kernshaw, Blizzard, Hightower, and Clark families residing in Clinton and Fayetteville, N.C., and Patterson, N.J. Letters describe daily life, sickness and death, and business and financial activities. There are copies of three letters written by Joseph and Henry Blizzard in 1864 from Camp Broad Water Ferry, Va. Several letters written in the 1870s describe experiences of family members who moved north to New Jersey, Ohio, and Chicago to work in factories. An unsigned letter from 1871 describes plans to move to Brazil and operate a cotton mill; additional undated and unsigned letter fragments describe Brazil. There are also letters describing Ocala, Fla., in the 1890s and some letters dated 1918 written from Camp Sevier in Greenville, S.C., and Washington, D.C. Correspondence, 1920-1928, is chiefly graduation announcements and wedding invitations. Also included are postcards; greeting cards; receipts; an 1874 estate inventory; an 1875 indenture for land in Sampson County, N.C.; copies of birth and death records; clippings; and other items. |
