• Cone Mills Corporation Records (#5247)

Herman Cone (originally Herman Kahn) was born in 1828. He was a Jewish-German immigrant who left Bavaria, Germany, for the United States in 1845. While in the United States, he met his wife, Helen Guggenheimer, and they settled in Jonesborough, Tenn., where he successfully ran a dry goods store. In the early 1870s, Herman and his family moved to Baltimore, Md., where in 1876, he opened H. Cone & Sons, a wholesale grocery firm. He and his wife had 13 children, including the eldest sons, Moses Herman Cone and Ceasar Cone, founders of Cone Mills Corporation (originally Proximity Manufacturing Company), a textile manufacturing company in Greensboro, N.C.

Herman Cone died in 1897.

The collection consists of an account book of approximately 160 pages, with the first 13 pages missing. It contains receipts, September 1857-December 1860, documenting purchases by Herman Cone of a variety of dry goods in New York City, Baltimore, Richmond, Philadelphia, and other locations.
