Scope and Content
The collection contains the files of the Coalition for Alternatives to Shearon Harris (CASH), an organization founded in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster in spring of 1986 to oppose the opening of Carolina Power & Light's Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant in Chatham County, N.C. The internal organization and activities CASH are chronicled, along with public activities, interaction with legislature and nuclear industry professionals, press releases, and newspaper articles. Also included are CASH's files relating to state and federal legislature, Carolina Power & Light, and various related organizations and publications. Clippings about nuclear power plants, nuclear waste, the Chernobyl disaster, and problems at other nuclear sites are included. Many clippings and whole issues of the Raleigh News and Observer, the Raleigh Times, the Durham Morning Herald, the Durham Sun, the Independent, and the Spectator, all of which published frequent articles, editorials, and letters to the editor about Shearon Harris, were not retained in the collection.
These materials arrived at the Southern Historical Collection with very little organization. They have been roughly sorted and arranged and put in archival folders and boxes. Some duplicates were removed, but many remain in the collection. Similar material may be found in more than one place in the collection. Researchers therefore should be inclusive in their searching strategies.
