Collection Overview
| Size | About 100 items |
| Abstract | Samuel Cooper was a native of New Jersey, adjutant general in the United States Army, and adjutant general and inspector general in the Confederate Army. Chiefly microfilm, the collection contains reminiscences, scattered correspondence, and other papers of Cooper and papers of his father, Major Samuel Cooper (1759-1809) of Massachusetts. Cooper's reminiscences cover the period 1818-1852 and discuss army operations in the Second Seminole War, 1841-1842, on the Texas frontier, 1851, and against Indians in Texas. Correspondence of Cooper chiefly concerns the United States War Department before the Civil War and home life in Fairfax County, Va. It includes eight letters, 1853-1854, from Captain Lucius Bellinger Northrop (1811-1894) to Cooper concerning Northrop's sick furlough from the United States Army; and two letters, 1863 and 1864, concerning the military situation around Wilmington, N.C., and Richmond, Va., respectively. Papers of Major Samuel Cooper (1759-1809) include brief reminiscences of his Revolutionary War service, including the Battle of Lexington and the Boston Tea Party. |
