Information
Claude Currie (born 1890) was a Democratic state senator of Durham, N.C. Currie was born in Montgomery County, N.C., and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He first served as state senator in 1927 and subsequently served 1945-1972, excepting the 1951 session. In 1971 Currie represented the 11th District, composed of Durham, Orange, and Person counties, and he was chairman of the senate Committee on Public Health. As a private citizen in Durham he was chairman of the board of directors of Security and Loan Association.

Scope and Content
The collection includes political papers of Claude Currie, 1971-1972. Included are correspondence, brochures, and other papers relating to the 1971 session of the North Carolina General Assembly. About half of the collection consists of letters received from constituents regarding abortion legislation. The remainder of the correspondence is related to various issues before the state senate during the 1971 session including taxes, public works and programs, and other matters.
