DuBrutz Cutlar (1832-1898), lawyer of Wilmington, N.C., received an A.B. degree from the University of North Carolina in 1853. Cutlar served as Confederate alien custodian and receiver in the Cape Fear Division of the North Carolina judicial district, Wilmington, N.C., during the Civil War. Later, he was attorney for the Cape Fear Building Association.

The collection is one volume containing records, 1861-1864, kept by DuBrutz Cutlar as Confederate alien custodian and receiver in the Cape Fear Division of the North Carolina judicial district, Wilmington, N.C. during the Civil War, including records of estates of "alien enemies"; lists of petitions filed; clippings about United States taxes in North Carolina, 1860 and 1866; and records of transfers, mortgages, and foreclosures of real estate up to 1884. An index to the real estate records is included in the volume. An index to the Confederate States of America records is separately bound.
