Description
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Nathaniel Chesley Daniel, son of James Chesley and Ann Venable
Daniel, was born 20 July 1797 and died 9 May 1853. On 24 January
1828, he married Anne H. Bullock, daughter of James Bullock of
Warren County, N.C. Anne was born 29 September 1804 and died 25
March 1833. The Daniels had eleven children, of whom the eldest
was Nathaniel Beverly Daniel, born 1842.
The Daniels lived at "Tranquility" in Granville County, N.C.,
a plantation of several hundred acres. From 1830 to 1837, Daniel
and his brother, James B. Daniel, Jr., owned general stores in
Waterloo, N.C., and Clarkesville, Va.
DESCRIPTION
Chiefly correspondence among members of the Daniel family.
Many of the letters are from or to Anne H. Bullock Daniel and her
children. Others are to or from brothers and cousins. None of
the letters were written by Nathaniel C. Daniel. Most letters
are about daily events in the lives of family members. Of
interest is an 1856 letter informing Anne that she had inherited
a slave. Only one letter is from the Civil War period.
Also included are legal and financial papers, writings, and
biographical information. The legal and financial material
consists of a legal brief regarding a suit by James B. Daniel,
Jr., 1860; an 1864 tax statement of account; a copy of the 1876
will of James Daniel; a 1753 land indenture from Granville
County, N.C. (OP-4251/1); and tax receipts. The writings include
a history of Holland Mill Chapel near Gastonia, N.C., and
material relating to Daniel family history.
There are also two volumes, an account book, 1848-1856, of
Nathaniel C. Daniel (14 pp.) and an account book, 1854-1862, of
Anne H. Daniel (107 pp.), with records of purchases made by the
family. Also included are two copies of a photograph (P-4251/1-
2) of three former Daniel and Bullock family slaves--Jim, Rose,
and Lawson.
