Initial Inventory
General Abstract:
Charles Edward Eaton (1916- ), poet and professor, was
born in Winston-Salem, N.C., received his B.A. degree from the
University of North Carolina in 1936, studied at Princeton,
and received his M.A. degree from Harvard, where he worked
with Robert Frost, who later recommended him to the Bread Loaf
Writers' Conference. Eaton served as Vice Consul in Brazil,
1942-1946, and as professor of creative writing at UNC, 1946-
1952. In 1950, he married Isabel Patterson of Pittsburgh.
Letters, photographs, catalogs, clippings, printed books,
and other items relating to the work of artists represented in
the Charles and Isabel Eaton Art Collection. Included are
materials from exhibits of works from the collection at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1970 and at
Michigan State University in 1971, and materials relating to
agents and other collectors.

Processing Note:
Full processing of this collection has been deferred pending
future additions. Materials have been placed in binders by
Isabel Eaton. Each binder includes an inventory to its
contents. Copies of all of the binder inventories may be
found in the "Index to binders/Inventories of binders" volume
in Box 1. Other inventories appear at the beginning of
volumes. Note that materials added after August 1996 are not
processed, but may be used with staff assistance.
