DeLancey Evans (1858-1934) was educated at Bethel Academy, Warrenton, Va., and the University of the South. He was a special statistician on rice for the United States Department of Agriculture.

Scope and Content
The collection is primarily correspondence, 1909-1931, of DeLancey Evans about the history of the Evans family of Cumberland County, N.C. Also included are genealogical sketches and family trees for members of the Evans family including Johnathan Evans (1838-1892), Joseph W. Evans, and Thomas A. E. Evans (1829-1890). There are also notary's commissions, 1856-1905, of Thomas Evans, Wilmington, N.C.; photocopies of a brief diary of Mrs. Thomas (Adelaide) Evans, 1865, at Wilmington; a letter, 12 July 1860, from Robert Browning (1812-1889), Siena, Italy, to Ernest Georg Friedrich Grisanowski (1824-1888) regarding a journal subscription; and some miscellaneous maps and clippings.
